A black family's fear. They could not enjoy Obama's speech because they were wondering which one of those honkies had a gun and was about to blow their man away.
Sadly, a threat to "blow shit up" doesn't bother our ruling elite. They've already moved all their real portable assets overseas. The shit we blow up may be owned by them, but it's pretty much just worthless crap that was not worth dismantling and shipping over to Vietnam or China or Malaysia. My company sells a lot of stuff, but it's all created in China and Taiwan with just intellectual input from us here in the US. Our ruling elite has done a fine dandy job of already blowing up shit before we can do it for them, except they did it all legal and stuff, by purchasing the government and laws making it legal. When the day of reckoning comes and we realize we've been hollowed out by venal and evil un-American men, they'll be long gone, vacationing in Paraguay or the Bahamas or someplace like that, and then comes the job of picking up the rubble and rebuilding the country...

When we are talking about assassination as a political tool it is too late to consult Miss Manners on etiquette in the public discourse.

I appreciate your grasp of the possibilities, but you can't really tell the power elite not to assassinate, can you? I'd hate for us rational thinkers on the left to engage in conspiracy theory, and lose sight of what matters--the candidates actual platforms.
tata--not Miss manners, just reality. Bringing this fantasizng into the mix makes us out to be nutcases, IMO.
What is so revolutionary about this candidate? Why don't you imagine Clinton's being targeted?
Robert Kennedy died of old age, as did Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK, in the alternative universe in which Lisa lives.
As for why this candidate, uhm, well, good question. Maybe because he's from outside the traditional power elite and is, err, dusky-skinned, and appears to have a good chance of winning? As for the Clintons, they have already proven that they are quite ready and willing to work with the power elite in all ways.
As for the actual platforms, I'll just remind you that George W. Bush ran as a compassionate small-government conservative and promised a foreign policy of humility and non-intervention. Of the various candidates, I like Dennis Kucinich's platform best (but he's running for gadfly, not President), and then Edwards's platform. I'm singularly unimpressed by Obama's platform. But that's neither here nor there...
and let us not forget that beginning with the lbj/goldwater race, it was not until ghw bush/dukakis that we had a presidential election that was not directly influenced by an assassin.
factor in the fact that it is entirely plausible that somebody will take a shot at obama solely because they cannot envision a world where a president of the united states might be a person of color and there it is.
anticipating and being aware of the probable and possible moves that the enemy will make is never "planning for" an outcome in a strategic or tactical sense. still, if you don't do those things you are a very poor general.
Lisa, I don't mean to make this personal or personally about you. None of us is homicidal. We should expect someone to take a shot Obama for the simple reason that he is not white. There really are people who feel that deeply threatened. The Secret Service protects him because Obama has received credible death threats.
There's nothing new about this except our resolve that it should not happen predictably and preventably.
