Friday Random Ten

Here's the soundtrack for today:

Aye, Aye, Mama - - - Clifton Chenier
Rock Boogie Shout - - - Buckwheat Zydeco
Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover - - - Sophie B. Hawkins
When She Moves - - - The Bears (Rock)
Boogie Chillun' - - - John Lee Hooker (live, acoustic)
Page 43 - - - Graham Nash & David Crosby
Foggy, Foggy Dew - - - Tommy Makem (live bootleg, me on harp)
Pissin' In The Wind - - - Jerry Jeff Walker
Hazy Shade of Winter - - - The Bangles (this drummer rocks, that is all)
Cauce Corto, Aeroplano Pesado - - - Los Tigres Del Norte (Short Runway, Heavy Plane)

Bonus Track:
Super Flumina Babylonis - - - Palestrina (recorded in San Xavier Del Bac Mission by Linda Ronstadt, me on harp again)

That's my playlist for the morning. Gotta go do some rat killing in town. Dog to the groomer and other stuff. Abbie loves being clean, and she's shedding at a high rate, even for a German Shepherd right now, but she hates getting a bath. I hire that shit out because I don't have the heart.

7th Sister and I are of the same mind when Lani needs bathing. She whimpers and cries and looks like she's being tortured. We let someone else endure her pity party and then we enjoy a happy, clean dog.

she cries pitifully when i'm getting ready to leave, but as soon as she's let out of the holding cage and starts to goof around and play with the other dogs there she does fine. but, during the bath she gives me that "i thought we were friends" look and it just breaks my heart.

this way she gets to socialize with other dogs and i don't have to steel myself for the task or blame myself for putting off so long. . .

john lee hooker - i heard my mama say
let that boy boogie woogie

Oh yeah, Page 43 is one of my favorite songs by David. Love singing it. The melody just feels so good!

re: shedding

Lani has a very full undercoat and when the weather gets hot, it starts coming off in handfuls. Last year, the house was awash in dog hair. I finally got desperate enough to take her to a groomer who uses a Furminator to do a deshedding treatment. It removes the undercoat while leaving the top coat intact. She looked as though she had lost about 8 pounds when I picked her up. After about a week, the shedding had mostly stopped. She is slow to regrow the undercoat and I don't think I'll have to take her again this year but I will if I need to. BEst $50 I ever spent.

the furminator is a wonderful tool. it's what my groomer (who is bribed with all manner of goodies) uses on abbie. she spent nearly an hour at it on friday in half hour segments. a half an hour is about the limit of abbie's "good dog" tolerance of such stuff. although i think that's getting better because she knows how much better she feels at the end of it.

jewels, my groomer, is a shepherd breeder, and trainer along with her grooming and boarding business. she has contracts with the local cops, the highway patrol, la migra and customs to do all of their animals. it's a great thing for abbie because at another groomer she wouldn't have the chance to socialize with other working dogs. she's a rescue that i got from the air force. she was a bomb sniffer. she has that totally german outlook about work ethic, play ethic, all in all she's an ethical dog.

Hmmm, who the hell is Sophie B. Hawkins? I need to check this out if she's on your iPod. She added me to her MySpace friends awhile back and I had no idea who she was -- I figured she was just some local unknown musician since I'd had a couple of other musicians add me.

I should probably be embarrassed to post this -- admitting I had no idea who she is. And I'm like so into music and shit.

sophie's been about to break for about five years now. she tours incessantly and puts on a great show. i've known her since her days of slinging studio time backing everybody else up and humping jingles like a regular ass worker bee. i've always thought that she was absolutely something special. there were a couple of times that i even regretted being at the higher end of the payscale in the union.

i would have taken less for the sheer fun of playing with somebody like sophie. but, rules are rules when it comes to stuff like that. i have, when she's within a couple hours drive been happy to sit in and flog her band through the real deal.

she's a sweet heart, and a rare talent.
