Words I Say To Banish Fear

This saying was paraphrased in Longfellow's Hiawatha and many other places. I have seen it attributed to many different native americans. Because of the citation by Longfellow I am certain that it predates the Apache Nana that I was taught said this. Therefore, without an attribution beyond oral tradition, including an admission that this comes from my own memory I will give you this.

When it comes your time to die
Be not like those whose hearts are so filled
With the fear of death that they weep and beg
For a few seasons more to live their life
Over again in a different way.

At your time, stand up tall,
Look your death in the eyes
Like a friend that has come to greet you
Sing your Death Song proudly
For you are a Warrior,
Going home.

A lot of warrior peoples have parallel phrasings of the same philosophy, but this one is singularly beautiful.

i am at work on more posts that deal with the nature of fear from the celtic and the native american perspective. they are the main sides of my own american heritage and i have become heartily disgusted with the pandering and pushing of the fear agenda. i have decided that it is time to cease living in fear and will try to write about my own small ways. one project that i am currently working on has the working title "songs that could get you hung." where i explore songs through history that people sang, paid a terrible price for the singing, and kept singing. songs of defiance, rebellion, and love.

MB: I don't know if you remember but right after September 11th, Clear Channel went on the warpath and declared its stations wouldn't play songs that might make the meek nervous. Funny, that.

clear channel is an abomination. they are exactly the type of entity that the FCC was supposed to guard against. once again, deregulation has produced exactly the opposite effect that they said it would. when are people going to get a clue that the deregulators are lying assholes? clear channel has banned Peter & Gordon for crying out loud! They sang with Andy Bloody Williams! i must break this off before i go into a full on ranting. all i can say is that my own car has both satillite radio (sirius) and a port for the iPod. i have not listened to broadcast radio since the last time i was on the road during basketball finals.

oh yeah, and NPR for short trips. i fully expect the songs that could get you hung project will exist on the college campus circuit and NPR/PBS realm. i am currently awaiting a response to my grant application from NPR (hope, hope, hope) which would allow me to spend four to six months concentrating solely on this project without the distraction of having to whore jingles.
